Our Story
Welcome to Two Dollar Eats! The goal of this website is to provide recipes, meal plans and other resources to help you cut your food expenses while still eating healthy, delicious meals. Our main goal is to have an average cost of $2 per person per meal. This averages out to just $42 a week and $168 per month per person!
The inspiration for $2 per person comes from one of my all-time favorite podcasts ChooseFI. In this podcast, the hosts discuss the concept of Financial Independence (FI). Simply put, you have reached Financial Independence when you have enough income from investments and other passive income streams to pay your living expenses for the rest of your life. Once you reach FI, you can leave your day to day employment and start working on your dream projects, dedicate your time to service, or spend more time with your family and loved ones. Simply put, your time becomes your time again and you are not tied down in a “9-5” job.
Reaching Financial Independence has been a huge focus for our family and one small step to getting there is cutting our food budget. This enable us to increase how much we are able to save month-to-month. Previously we spent upwards of $700 to $1000 per month for just two of us. That is about $4 to $5.50 per person per meal in case you were wondering. Thinking about that now blows my mind. Over the last several years, especially since having kids, we have worked to cut our budget and were able to move the needle. It was not until hearing the concepts on ChooseFI of $2 per person per meal, that it really sunk in. We needed to cut out the excess. Once the concept really sunk in, it was easy to pinpoint where we were spending unnecessarily, and where we could cut. We now spend less than ever on food and are well within the goal of $2 per person per meal.
All in all, having a clear goal of where you want your money to go is what will really help. Whether you found this website hoping to save some money to buy a Ferrari, or to save additional money for retirement, you are in the right place. While the concepts discussed on the website may vary from situation to situation, using the resources of this website will help you to really cut your expenses and free your money to be used elsewhere, all while eating delicious and healthy food.
